Spain has been grappling with a series of intense forest fires this weekend, with emergency services working tirelessly to contain blazes across multiple regions. While some fires have been brought under control, others continue to demand meaningful resources and pose a threat to communities and natural landscapes.
Extremadura: Evacuees Return Home as Fire Evolves Favorably
In a welcome growth, teh regional president of Extremadura, María Guardiola, announced that all residents evacuated due to a wildfire in the community could return to their homes. The decision was made following the “favorable” evolution of the fire, allowing both campers and residents of nearby towns to safely return. the Infocaex (Forest Fire Data System of the Autonomous community of Extremadura) has confirmed the positive shift in the situation.
Alicante, Almería, Ávila… A Weekend of Intense Firefighting
The province of Alicante found itself at the center of another significant firefighting effort this weekend, particularly in the towns of Ibi and Villena.
In Ibi, the UME (Military Emergencies Unit) deployed 88 personnel and 43 vehicles to combat a fire that ravaged approximately 185 hectares. Of this, a considerable 147 hectares were within the Font Roja Natural Park. The blaze necessitated the evacuation of 20 people, primarily those residing in second homes.
Meanwhile, in Villena, a fire that ignited on Saturday along the cemetery road of Ladanía de la Encina, in the Mojón Barranco, was officially stabilized on sunday morning. despite a regrowth earlier in the day, the alert remains active due to the persistent threat posed by heat and wind. This fire also extended its reach into the municipality of Almansa, in Albacete, Castilla La Mancha.
The province of Almería also faced a serious incident in Lubrín, specifically in the Cortijo de Marchaico area. This fire, which has not yet been deactivated, continues to be a major concern, with over a hundred Infoca troops engaged in containment efforts. The challenging terrain and strong wind gusts have elaborate operations, requiring the deployment of seven aerial units, including helicopters and coordination aircraft, on sunday. the previous day saw an even larger deployment of 16 aircraft.
Positive News from Ávila and toledo
Amidst the challenging news, there was also positive progress on two other significant fires. The blaze in Navaluenga, Ávila, which had affected around 1,500 hectares, was reported as controlled on Sunday.
Equally encouraging was the news from Méntrida, Toledo. This fire, which also impacted the Community of madrid, has been brought under control. In total, this extensive blaze consumed approximately 3,100 hectares of land.
