Exeter⁣ Chiefs’ Tommy Wyatt Out Until 2026 After Knee Injury

 Updated June 11, 2025

Exeter Chiefs’ Tommy‍ Wyatt, a highly-regarded back, will be sidelined until 2026 due to a⁣ severe knee injury. ⁣The 25-year-old sustained‍ a ruptured anterior‍ cruciate ligament (ACL) in⁤ his left knee during the⁢ season’s final home ‌match against Sale.

This setback follows Wyatt’s recent return in November from a comparable injury to his other ⁤knee, which had kept him off the field for a significant portion of 2024. Despite the time away, Wyatt showcased his versatility this season, ‌scoring⁣ 10 tries in 19⁢ appearances across ⁢all competitions, playing both on the wing and at full-back.

Wyatt is scheduled to undergo surgery soon. The Exeter Chiefs anticipate his recovery will take ⁣six ⁣to nine months. This knee injury ⁤ is a blow to the team, impacting their⁣ rugby union plans and ⁢ player⁣ availability.

Rob Baxter, director of rugby, expressed his disappointment on the club’s website. “Everyone⁢ is ⁣gutted for tommy,” Baxter said. “He ⁤worked‍ extremely hard ‌to come back⁤ from last season’s injury and was beginning to really break through again in⁤ our most recent ⁣games.”

“From what we’ve been told from⁢ our medical contacts, this is an injury that Tommy was more structurally predisposed to suffering, having already injured his other ACL,” Baxter added.

Baxter remains optimistic about Wyatt’s future. “the only slight positive we ⁣can ⁢take from⁤ this situation is⁢ that ⁤once he completes this ‌latest period of‍ rehabilitation, Tommy will be even stronger,” he ⁢stated. “We certainly know he’ll work extremely hard to get back fit. Everyone is helping⁣ to ensure he remains in good ⁤spirits, and we’ll all do what we can to try to get ‍him moving forward in his ⁣recovery quickly.”

What’s next

Following surgery, Wyatt will begin an extensive rehabilitation program. ⁣The Exeter Chiefs will focus on supporting his recovery, aiming‌ for his return to the field stronger than before in 2026.
