Arab Universities See Role Rise in QS World Rankings 2026

The latest QS World University Rankings showcase significant advancements for universities across the Arab region. King fahd university of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in saudi Arabia achieved a historic milestone, entering the top 100 globally at 67th place.This leap underscores the impact of KFUPM’s strategic transformation initiated in 2020.
Qatar University also climbed to 112th, while King Saud University advanced to 143rd, solidifying the region’s growing influence in higher education. The 2026 rankings evaluated over 8,467 universities from 106 locations, featuring 107 institutions from the Arab region, a notable increase of 25 from the previous year.
The QS methodology assesses universities based on factors such as academic and employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, research impact, and international diversity. New metrics also consider sustainability and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In the UAE, Khalifa University of Science and Technology jumped 25 places to rank 177th globally, maintaining its position as the nation’s top university for the eighth consecutive year. Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, president of Khalifa University, noted the ranking reflects the university’s growing global presence and contributions to the UAE’s knowledge economy.
oman also saw progress,with Sultan Qaboos University climbing 28 spots to 334th worldwide. 42% of ranked Arab universities improved their standing, while 32% remained stable.
Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, highlighted the rapid evolution of the higher education landscape in the Arab region, noting that governments are increasingly linking university performance to national goals.
dr. Muhammad Al Saggaf, president of KFUPM, said the university’s entry into the global top 100 reflects its bold vision and the Kingdom’s support, calling it a pivotal moment in KFUPM’s journey.
