**New Delhi, July 9, 2023 (03:12 PM IST)**: In the past two days, heavy rainfall has led to the unfortunate demise of 12 individuals in North India. The meteorological department has issued warnings, stating that regions including Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir can expect further heavy downpours in the coming days.

In Delhi, incessant rain since Saturday morning caused widespread waterlogging and subsequent traffic congestion. The intensity of rainfall recorded has not been witnessed since July 1982, with 153 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour were reported. Although the rain is predicted to persist until July 14, its intensity is expected to diminish, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Tragedy struck when four individuals lost their lives in Rajasthan due to the heavy rain. Additionally, a 58-year-old woman in Delhi lost her life as the ceiling of her apartment collapsed. In Muzaffar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, a woman and a six-year-old boy faced a tragic fate when their house crumbled under the weight of the downpour. Similarly, three members of a family in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, met the same unfortunate end. In Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, two soldiers also lost their lives due to floods caused by the heavy rainfall.

During the torrential downpour, the Jamia Metro station area in Delhi was completely submerged, and areas such as Sarai Kale Khan, South Extension, Geetha Colony, Ring Road, and the vicinity of Akshardham temple experienced severe flooding. Traffic was disrupted at 56 locations, while waterlogging occurred in 26 areas. The Delhi Traffic Police took to Twitter to inform the public about the affected routes and advised commuters to exercise caution.

Waterlogging caused major disruptions in traffic flow at South Extension, Sarai Kale Khan, Lajpat Nagar, ITO, Harsh Vihar, parts of Central and Outer Delhi, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and the stretch between Geeta Colony and Akshardham Temple. Incidents of falling trees were also reported in Anand Niketan, Hos Khas, and Okhla, among other parts of the city. Commuting was severely impacted at 25 locations, including the Gurugram Expressway.

The Delhi-Jaipur National Highway and the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, along with areas such as Narsingpur, Basai Road, Rajendra Park, RD City, Railway Road, Kadipur, Vatika Chowk, Delhi Road, Udyog Vihar, and Bajghera, experienced significant flooding. To cope with the ongoing inclement weather, the weather center has issued a yellow warning for the city and its surroundings, forecasting adverse conditions for the next week.

As a consequence of landslides and heavy rain, the pilgrimage to Amarnath had to be canceled. Potholes on the Srinagar-Jammu road prompted authorities to halt around 3000 vehicles.

New Delhi: 12 people died in two days due to heavy rains in North India. The weather department has predicted that Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir are likely to experience heavy rains in the coming days.

In Delhi, there was waterlogging and traffic jams due to the rain that fell for several hours since Saturday morning. This is the first time since July 1982 that the daily rainfall rate has been so high. Delhi received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours last day. Thunderstorms and strong winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour were reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the rain is expected to continue till July 14, but the intensity is likely to reduce.

Four people died in rain in Rajasthan. A 58-year-old woman died after the ceiling of her apartment fell off in Delhi. A woman and a six-year-old boy died after their house collapsed in Muzaffar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rains. Three members of a family died in the same manner in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Two soldiers died in the floods caused by heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district last day.

Jamia Metro station area was completely submerged in water during the Perumazha. Sarai Kale Khan, South Extension, Geetha Colony Ring Road and Akshardham temple area were also heavily flooded. Traffic was disrupted in 56 places. There was waterlogging in 26 places. The Delhi Traffic Police also tweeted to inform people about waterlogged routes and warn commuters.
