Tory Lanez Shooting Appeal: New Evidence Blocked
Tory Lanez’s Bid for Freedom Falters as Appeals Court Rejects New Evidence in Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Case
Tory Lanez, legally known as Daystar Peterson, has suffered another setback in his attempt to overturn his 2022 felony conviction for shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion. the California Court of Appeals has rejected two petitions seeking to introduce new evidence, further solidifying Lanez’s 10-year prison sentence.
The rejected petitions centered on two key points: the absence of testimony from Peterson’s driver and a new statement from a security guard connected to Kelsey Harris, Megan Thee Stallion’s former friend. Lanez’s legal team had hoped this new data would cast doubt on his guilt, but the court remained unconvinced.
What Was the “New Evidence” Lanez Tried to Introduce?
The core of Lanez’s appeal hinged on a statement allegedly made by Bradley Jennings, who worked as a bodyguard and driver for Kelsey Harris. According to Lanez’s legal team, Jennings claimed he overheard Harris admitting to firing the gun first. Their version of events painted Peterson as attempting to disarm Harris, with the gun firing accidentally during the struggle.
“In essence, Mr. Peterson never shot anybody,” Lanez’s attorney stated at a press conference in May,attempting to shift blame. This narrative directly contradicts the prosecution’s case, which successfully argued that Lanez intentionally shot Megan Thee Stallion in the feet following an argument.
Megan Thee Stallion’s Team Responds
Megan Thee Stallion’s team swiftly responded to Lanez’s renewed efforts, dismissing them as a desperate attempt to evade duty.
“Tory Lanez was tried and convicted by a jury of his peers and his case was properly adjudicated through the court system,” they stated, emphasizing the validity of the original trial and verdict. “This is not a political matter – this is a case of a violent assault that was resolved in the court of law.”
Lanez’s Legal Battles Continue
Despite this latest defeat, Lanez’s legal journey isn’t over. He has an active main appeal scheduled for oral argument on August 18. This appeal will likely focus on arguments raised during his initial trial and sentencing, offering another avenue for him to challenge his conviction.A History of Setbacks
this isn’t the first time Lanez has faced disappointment in his attempts to overturn the verdict. in May 2023, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied his motion for a new trial, rejecting claims that evidence had been improperly submitted during the original proceedings.
During that hearing, Lanez made a personal plea to the judge, stating, “I could be your son. I could be your brother,” but his emotional appeal failed to sway the court. He was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2023, a sentence he is currently serving. The repeated rejection of his appeals underscores the challenges he faces in overturning the jury’s decision and securing his freedom.
