Joao Almeida of Team UAE showcased a stellar performance in the final time trial,snatching the Tour de Suisse title from overnight leader Kevin Vauquelin. The Portuguese rider’s effort secured him the overall victory.
Almeida outpaced Austrian Felix Gall by 25 seconds in the time trial. vauquelin, the Frenchman who began the day in the lead, finished fourth in the stage, ceding the lead by a minute and 40 seconds.
The 26-year-old Almeida, who narrowly missed the title last year by 22 seconds, is now focused on assisting teammate Tadej Pogacar in his tour de France title defense. Britain’s Oscar Onley secured third place in both the final stage and overall standings.
Almeida acknowledged a fast start in the 10.1km uphill time trial. “I think I started too fast,” Almeida said. “I overpaced in the beginning… but in the end it was not necessary.”
