Developers submitting apps to the Apple app Store are now required to provide data regarding thier trader status, a change implemented to comply with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect in February 2024.
This update, announced by Apple, impacts all Account holders and Admins within the Apple Developer Program. As of December 14, 2025, developers must declare whether or not they operate as a trader within the EU through App Store Connect.
What Does This Mean for developers?
The DSA aims to create a safer digital space for users within the EU, and this new requirement is a key component of that effort. By identifying traders, the EU seeks to increase clarity and accountability for those offering digital services.
Specifically, developers submitting new apps – or updating existing ones – will be prompted to indicate their trader status. if a developer identifies as a trader, Apple may request documentation to verify the provided trader contact information. This documentation helps ensure the accuracy of information available to both Apple and EU regulators.
Why is Trader Status Importent?
Under the DSA, online platforms
have specific obligations related to identifying and addressing illegal content and protecting users.Determining whether an app provider is a trader is crucial for enforcing these obligations. Traders, generally defined as those acting for commercial purposes, are subject to a higher level of scrutiny and responsibility.
this change isn’t simply a bureaucratic hurdle; it’s a fundamental shift in how the App Store operates within the EU legal framework.Developers should proactively review the requirements and gather any necessary documentation to ensure a smooth submission process.
