On April 30, 2024, foreign news agencies reported that an explosion occurred inside an ammunition depot at a military base in Kampong Speu Province, southern Cambodia. On the afternoon of Saturday, April 27, 2024, it caused the deaths of at least 20 soldiers. It is not yet clear what the cause was.
News reports said that the explosion happened around 2:45 pm local time. Prime Minister Hun Manet posted on Facebook stating: He was shocked by the incident. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of the soldiers who died.
The Cambodian Prime Minister also ordered the government to pay compensation of 740,000 baht to each deceased family, while the families of the injured will receive 185,000 baht each.
The Cambodian army has confirmed that this incident was an explosion from an ammunition warehouse. One lorry loaded with weapons was destroyed, along with an office building and military housing nearby. In addition, 25 houses in the area were damaged.
