20 people have been killed after a bus plunged into a gorge in northern Pakistan

According to Pakistani daily Dawn, a bus crashed into a ravine on the morning of the 3rd (local time) while traveling on the Karakoram Mountain Road in Diamer, Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan.

Showkat Riaz, the Diamer district rescue officer, told the local media that it seems the driver had been driving too much and the bus lost control and fell into the gorge.

When the accident happened, the Pakistan Army rescue team launched a large-scale rescue operation, sending helicopters to transport the injured to hospital.

Gilgit-Baltistan provincial government spokesman Faizaullah Farak said: “Twenty passengers died and 30 were seriously injured in the tragic accident. The injured are being treated at a nearby hospital.”

The road where the accident happened connects Pakistan and China.

Fall accidents are frequent as narrow roads are built on the steep cliffs of the Karakoram Mountains.

In addition, terrorist attacks targeting Chinese people who are trying to develop the region are becoming more frequent in this region in connection with the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Although the project is held in Pakistan, most of the jobs are filled by Chinese workers, so small-scale insurgents or terrorist groups are dissatisfied and commit terrorism.

Last December, an armed group opened fire on a bus traveling on this road, killing eight people and injuring 26 others.
