Tragedy on BR-324: Two Sisters Among Three Women Killed in Accident
A collision between a van and a lorry occurred at 4:30am near Simões Filho, resulting in the deaths of three women.

The two sisters, Marinalva dos Santos Bastos, 67, and Maria dos Santos Bastos, 57, were among the three women killed in the accident. They were in the driver’s seat and took the brunt of the crash. The third fatal victim, Ildenice de Melo Santos, was thrown from the car in the crash and died instantly.
Marinalva and Maria were treated at the scene, but due to the severity of the collision and the fact that they were trapped in the wreckage, they did not survive their injuries. The driver of the van said that the accident happened when he tried to avoid a car that was trying to overtake him.
However, a police source stated that there were no signs of overtaking in the area. The lorry was traveling at 60km per hour at the time of the accident, which is normal speed. The van was traveling at a higher speed, but the calculation still needs to be done to confirm what speed it was.
Dilson Costa Santos, 56, the owner of the truck that was hit, said he heard from the van driver that a third vehicle was passing at the time, but said he never saw it. “I didn’t see that smaller car he mentioned, I only felt the impact on the bottom of the truck. To be honest, I didn’t even see the van. After it hit hard, I stopped the car and understood that they had hit the bottom of the truck It all happened very quickly”, said Dilson.
The collision happened around 4:30am and caused a long traffic jam, affecting BR-324 towards Salvador until 8:30am. Teams from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) controlled movement on the road while agents from the Bahia Civil Police (PC) carried out an investigation at the scene and removed the bodies of the victims.
City Hall Declares Grief
The city council of Mutuípe, in southern Bahia, declared official mourning in the municipality after the accident. The municipal managers regretted the accident and offered their solidarity to the bereaved families.
The van containing the fatal victims was carrying 15 passengers and tried to avoid a vehicle before suddenly colliding with the bottom of a lorry. The accident happened near the city of Candeias.
