In a grievous turn of events, a fire erupted at a joyous wedding celebration in the Hamdaniyah district of Nineveh Province, northeastern Iraq, late yesterday evening (September 26), resulting in a staggering loss of life. Reports indicate that at least 100 individuals lost their lives, while an additional 150 were left injured.

The Deputy Governor of Nineveh Province, Hassan al-Allak, informed Reuters that the confirmed death toll currently stands at 113. Iraqi state media, conversely, places the figure at no less than 100 dead and 150 wounded.

The Iraq Civil Defense Office revealed that the incident occurred within the premises of the event, where festive fireworks were being utilized to commemorate the newly married couple. Unfortunately, these sparks ignited and engulfed the entire building in flames.

“We witnessed the fire swiftly consuming the structure. Although some managed to escape in a timely manner, there were individuals who remained trapped inside. Even those who managed to flee suffered injuries,” recounted Imad Yohana, a survivor aged 34.

Video footage shared by Reuters portrays Iraqi firefighters cautiously navigating through the debris once the fire had been extinguished, utilizing torches to meticulously inspect various sections for any remaining casualties.

Both central Iraqi authorities and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region swiftly collaborated to provide assistance, dispatching fire trucks and medical teams to the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that the ill-fated building was constructed using highly flammable materials, causing its collapse to hasten once the blaze had commenced.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire commenced at 10:45 PM local time while hundreds of attendees were immersed in merriment, indulging in food, drinks, and socializing.
