Tragic Love Beyond Borders: Couple’s Desperate Video Call Ends in Heartbreaking Double Suicide

A couple committed suicide by hanging their lover on a video call at their husband’s house, the family said. The incident took place in Betua area of Lalmai upazila Comilla on Saturday night (October 26). That day at 11 pm, the police found the hanging body of the new bride from her husband’s house. Meanwhile, the police found a note by the side of the body.

The deceased housewife Khadija Akhtar Urmi (17) is the daughter of Jamal Hussain of Matiara village under Comilla Sadar South Police Station. She is a class 8 student at Chowara Girls High School. On the other hand, the deceased Omani expatriate lover Safayet Hossain (23) who was part of the video call. He is the son of Abdul Khalek of Joynagar village of East Jorkanan Union of Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila.

It is known that Khadija deceased on 13th September was married to Rang Mistry Arifur Rahman of village Betua (Krishnapur) in Bhullin North Union of Lalmai Upazila. Because of child marriage, marriages are arranged secretly at home for fear of mobile courts.

The note recovered by the police was written, I wanted the two to live together. He didn’t let me live, I can’t live without him. Even if he is alive, you kill him and feed his family with prison rice. So I left the world myself, I took it with me. One last wish for you. Obligation to parents, brothers and sisters, as they are not allowed to stay in the world. May we be buried together. Burial in the same cemetery a day earlier or later.

Nurunnahar, the mother of the deceased Urmi, said that we married our daughter on last October 14 (Monday), with our relative Betuar Arifur Rahman. After marriage, the girl was happy in her husband’s house. Urmi and her boyfriend Safayet committed suicide over a video call on Saturday night.

Abdul Khalek, Safayat’s expatriate father, said, I sent my son to Oman a year ago. A few days ago, the son suddenly fainted at work abroad. I heard about the news that a girl called Urmi was introduced to my son on Facebook Messenger. Suddenly the girl got married and fell ill. I heard that a girl hanged herself by writing a note on a video call with my son on Saturday night.

Officer in Charge (OC) Lalmai Police Station. Shah Alam told Bangla Tribune, I heard that the girl got married a few days ago. The expatriate committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan of the house while keeping her boyfriend on a video call. I heard that the expatriate lover also committed suicide in the same way.

The police found the hanging body of the bride at 11 o’clock on Saturday night. Later, the body was sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital corporation for post-mortem.

Noting that a handwritten note was found next to the body, the OC said it is believed the girl had written it to her parents before committing suicide. Mehedi Hasan, brother of the bride in this incident filed a wrongful death case in the police station as the complainant.
