An incident occurred in Los Angeles (LA), where a mentally ill Korean man was shot and killed by the police.

According to the LA Police Department on the 4th, around 11 am on the 2nd, a man in his 40s named Yang was shot dead by police at a house in Koreatown, LA. At the time, Mr. Yang refused to be transferred to a mental treatment facility by LA County Mental Health Department staff at the request of his parents. The police who responded to DMH’s call for help are said to have shot Mr Yang in the living room when he approached the police with a weapon. Mr Yang was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is known that Mr. Yang was born in Korea and maintained his Korean nationality even after immigrating to the United States with his parents as a child. He is known to have previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. LAPD Public Information Officer Bruce Borihan said police had been called to the area several times before because of Yang’s mental health issues.

The bereaved families claim that the police overreacted. Mr. father said Yang told the Hankook Ilbo in America, “At the time, I explained my son’s condition to the police officers in detail, and the family stayed outside the house according to the instructions. They say that my son has been shot four times, and I understand why he had to be shot so many times.” “It’s hard to do,” he said.

The Korean Society of Los Angeles also said, “As far as is known, we requested the assistance of the police to treat the victim who was suffering from mental difficulties, and it is completely incomprehensible that the police officers who arrived at the scene shot the victim even dead. although they are aware of the situation.” Accordingly, the LA Consulate General requested a thorough and fair investigation by the LA Police Department, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials announced that they were providing necessary consular assistance immediately upon becoming aware of the incident.

The LA Police Department announced that it would review whether the use of firearms was appropriate by analyzing the footage from body cameras worn by police officers who responded to the scene at the time. Acting LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said, “We will be investigating this case very carefully.”
