Kim Gyu-jin (32) and Kim Se-yeon (35), who became the first same-sex couple in Korea to make headlines by giving birth to a daughter, shared their current status in a magazine interview. The two previously announced the news of their daughter’s birth in August last year.

Cosmopolitan published an interview with Kim Gyu-jin and Kim Se-yeon’s family on its online website on the 30th of last month.

The two officially married in New York in 2019. After that, she received a sperm donation anonymously and randomly at a fertility clinic in Belgium, managed to get pregnant, and gave birth in August last year. They considered having the treatment in Korea, but reportedly gave up because sperm is only provided to legally married couples or common-law heterosexual couples in Korea. At the time of giving birth, Gyu-jin drew attention by posting ‘Oh Chul-wan (birth completed today)’ on her social media.

In this interview, when they were asked ‘What do you think a family is?’, they both replied that ‘blood ties’ are not important. Se-yeon said, “If we love each other and think of ourselves as family, we are family,” and added, “It’s nothing special.” Gyu-jin also said, “Under civil law, the scope of the family includes not only the spouse, immediate blood relatives, and siblings, but also the spouse of immediate blood relatives, and the immediate blood relatives and siblings of the spouse . But what’s interesting is that in the latter case, there’s a clause that says, ‘Only if you live together,'” he said “They know that staying with each other.” He said, “I don’t think family is just blood relatives, but as my wife said, I think it’s important to think of each other as family.”

Gyu-jin and Se-jin initially had no intention of having children, but when Gyu-jin was sent to France, which is relatively open to sexual minorities, they decided to get pregnant. Gyu-jin said, “Originally, neither my wife nor I had any intention of having children. “My wife was afraid to give birth, and I wasn’t confident that I would be a good parent,” he said. “I was sent to France. “It was easy to get started as sperm donation centers and accessibility have improved,” he said.

Regarding the malicious comments thrown at us just because we are sexual minorities, Gyujin said, “If you meet us in real life, you’ll never be able to tell.” Gyu-jin said, “Malicious comments are posted not only on Mom Cafe, but also on the community at my alma mater, and even though I revealed that my wife is a doctor, they are also posted on the community of doctors,” and “Once, I left a comment on a malicious post on Mom Cafe saying, ‘I’m also here because I’m a mom.’ an anecdote.

They also mentioned how they would provide ‘sex education’ for their child in the future. Gyu-jin said, “No matter how I grow up, I won’t be typical.” At the clinic in Belgium, I was asked, ‘You won’t be surrounded by men every day, so how will you deal with that?’ “The adviser said that in order for a child to fully understand the different sexes, the child can fully understand the different sexes by showing the strengths, weaknesses, and various aspects of men, rather than looking at people who have been filtered out. ” Se-yeon also agreed, saying, “If we only show carefully selected adults, that’s not reality.”

Finally, they both expressed their hope that everyone would live positively in their respective sites. Se-yeon said, “I hope everyone can live affirming themselves in their own situation,” and Gyu-jin said, “It wouldn’t be so fun if everyone and every family in this society were the same .” “Everyone, together, “I hope I can have as much fun as I have so far,” he said.
