Revitalizing an Edwardian Home in Dublin 6
The owners of an Edwardian home in Dublin 6 wanted to infuse warmth and color into their space. They hired interior designer Alena Chikurnikova, known as Alena C Design. With 12 years of experience in Ireland, she transformed their vision into reality.
Client Goals
The main goal was to create a joyful environment that reflected the family’s personality. The client requested a decluttered look, ensuring everything had a designated place. Alena prioritized functionality and aimed to repurpose as much existing furniture as possible.
Design Approach
Alena began with a consultation, observing the client’s style from their clothing and accessories. She incorporates the concept of dopamine dressing into home decor, focusing on how families communicate and interact. For her, color is crucial, especially in Ireland’s often gray climate.
She developed an idea book for each room, using a consistent color palette. The design emphasized warmth, minimalism, and a quirky charm. Bold colors were achieved through paint, combining strong brush strokes and subtle washes. Existing furniture and collected artwork were integrated throughout the house.
Entrance Hall and Staircase
The entrance hall showcases a colorful stairway with a banister and balustrades painted in four shades. The rail is in Poppy Rose, with balustrades in Marble Pink, Angel Breath, and Chinese Cherry. This colorful pattern continues to the attic. Hard-wearing floor paint by Tikkurila covers the steps, while machine-washable rugs from Kukoon add comfort and ease of cleaning.
Living Spaces
The reception rooms are interconnected. The sitting room features marshmallow pink gauzy linen curtains, while at the back, a playroom features painted arches in Mid Peridot, framing a String furniture desk. A guest WC under the stairs is adorned with a stunning navy blue mural and a brass hygiene hose for practicality.
Kitchen Renovation
The eat-in kitchen is brightened by a large picture window. Alena removed a partition wall to create open space for units and a dining table. Shelving units hide laundry facilities, while a pantry adds functionality with slatted drawers for fresh produce.
A designated breakfast station allows for neatly stored appliances. An additional pull-up unit provides extra counter space for cooking and baking.
Bedrooms
The principal bedroom features a mural separated into three panels above a velvet bedhead. A child’s bedroom has customized bunks with a decorative rope feature, supporting both sleeping and lounging.
Fun Details
Alena’s design blends color and practicality. Curved shapes add interest and keep the space inviting. The office areas use complementary tones to maintain visual harmony.
This reimagined home in Dublin 6 excels in livability and style, reflecting the family’s spirit while ensuring functionality throughout.
