Real Madrid will gain Trent Alexander-Arnold’s services a month earlier than expected after agreeing to pay Liverpool $11.3 million. The England international is now set to join the Spanish club on june 1, ensuring his availability for the Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold had previously agreed to a free transfer to Madrid upon the expiration of his Liverpool contract. Though, the original July 1 signing date would have interfered with Madrid’s participation in the summer tournament. To resolve this, Madrid negotiated with Liverpool to secure the right back’s arrival in time for Xabi Alonso’s first competitive matches as manager.
The deal represents a financial win for Liverpool, who had anticipated losing Alexander-Arnold without compensation. Madrid initially proposed a fee under $1 million, but ultimately paid significantly more. Liverpool will also save on a month’s wages.
Liverpool is reportedly planning to replace Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth $40 million. The club is also reportedly targeting Frimpong’s teammate Florian Wirtz and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez to further bolster their squad.
Alexander-Arnold will be joined by Dean Huijsen, also arriving from Bournemouth on June 1, to reinforce Madrid’s defense. Both players will have approximately two weeks to integrate with their new teammates before Madrid’s campaign begins against Al-Hilal on June 18.
What’s next
Alexander-Arnold will look to quickly integrate into Real Madrid’s squad as they prepare for upcoming competitions, while Liverpool aims to finalize deals for their targeted replacements to fill the void left by his departure.
