A judge-alone trial is currently examining CCTV footage of a violent confrontation between members of the Greazy Dogs and Mongols gangs in Mount Maunganui. The legal proceedings center on an alleged attack involving five members of the Greazy Dogs gang.

The evidence presented in court includes footage and communications regarding a clash that occurred when a group of Greazy Dogs members encountered Mongols members at a McDonald’s outlet. The trial highlights the tension between the two rival groups in the Bay of Plenty region.

Incident Details and Police Response

The confrontation occurred on Maunganui Road, near the intersection with Bain Street. Police responded to reports of disorder around 9:30 a.m. On June 20, 2023, involving two groups of gang members.

According to Inspector Clifford Paxton, the Western Bay Of Plenty area commander, some individuals involved in the clash were carrying weapons. Upon the arrival of police, several people dispersed from the scene.

The violence resulted in one person being transported to a hospital with serious injuries, while multiple other individuals sustained minor injuries.

Arrests and Legal Charges

Police arrested eight people following the incident. The charges against those in custody were divided into two groups:

Arrests and Legal Charges
  • Three individuals were charged with aggravated robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and assault.
  • Five individuals were charged with fighting in a public place and possession of offensive weapons.

The current trial involves five members of the Greazy Dogs gang who are facing charges related to the alleged attack on the Mongols. The court is reviewing CCTV footage of the event as part of the proceedings.

Community Impact

The gang clash caused immediate disruption to the local community. The Maunganui All Day Kindergarten on Miro Street was forced into lockdown during the incident. An employee of the kindergarten confirmed that the facility remained in lockdown until police provided an all-clear.

Inspector Paxton stated that the behavior of the groups was not acceptable and that unlawful gang behavior would be met with firm enforcement action.

Regional Gang Context

The conflict is part of a broader pattern of tension in the Bay of Plenty. The Mongol Nation, described as a newcomer to the regional gang scene, has been involved in tit-for-tat conflicts with rival gangs, including the Greazy Dogs, since at least 2020.
