Welcoming Ceremony for Paris Paralympic Hong Kong Team

The SAR Government held a welcoming ceremony for the Paris Paralympic Hong Kong team at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre. Chief Executive John Lee praised the athletes’ performance, which showed that the Government was on the right track in promoting disabled sports.

Athletes Share Their Stories

Ho Wan-kei, double gold medalist in boccia at the Paris Paralympic Games, said: “We hope to tell everyone with a limited body that even if we have physical difficulties, we can still have the courage to pursue our dreams. We hope to share our story with different people and encourage everyone.”

39-year-old wheelchair badminton player Chan Ho-yuen bid farewell to his international career with a silver medal. Paris Paralympic wheelchair badminton silver medalist Chan Ho Yuen said: “It turns out that when you leave that place, you will be reluctant to leave. We just saw in the camera that the most was the sweat and tears of the athletes. This moved me very much, because seeing every athlete’s tears, I was very touched, because they must have given 120% of their efforts.”

Hong Kong Team’s Achievements

The Hong Kong team sent a total of 23 athletes to compete in eight major events in this Paralympic Games, winning a total of 3 golds, 4 silvers and 1 bronze, and ranked in the top eight in 16 events, with an overall ranking of 32nd, the highest ranking since the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Chief Executive John Lee’s Praise

Chief Executive John Lee praised the athletes for their indomitable sportsmanship. Chief Executive John Lee pointed out: “Successfully stepping onto the stage of the Paralympic Games is itself proof that you are all world-class athletes. The outstanding performance of all the athletes in this Paralympic Games also reflects the correct direction and effectiveness of the Government’s promotion of sports for the disabled.”
