Tropical Storm Ofel (Usagi) Weakens: Updates on Damage in Cagayan and Sea Conditions
Tropical Storm Ofel Update
Tropical Storm Ofel, internationally known as Usagi, has weakened as it moves slowly over the sea west of Taiwan. As of 4 a.m., Ofel’s center was located 240 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h, gusts up to 90 km/h, and a central pressure of 998 hPa. The storm is moving north northeastward slowly.
Strong to gale-force winds extend 160 km from Ofel’s center. Ofel re-entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday night but is not expected to bring significant rainfall to the country.
Coastal Conditions
Batanes will experience rough seas with waves up to 3 meters due to Ofel. PAGASA advises small boats and unprepared vessels to stay off the water under these sea conditions. Coastal waters forecast includes:
- Babuyan Islands: Seas up to 2.5 m
- Northern coasts of Cagayan and Ilocos Norte: Seas up to 2.0 m
Boats should take precautions and avoid venturing out when conditions are rough.
Storm Path and Outlook
Ofel is expected to move northeast, passing through southern Taiwan and emerging at sea east of Taiwan by early Sunday. The storm will likely weaken further due to mountainous terrain and unfavorable conditions, possibly becoming a remnant low by Sunday.
The public and disaster management offices should take necessary precautions to protect life and property. PAGASA will provide the next update at 11 a.m.
