NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump reiterated his claim that he could quickly end the war in ukraine, while also assigning blame to President Joe biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the ongoing conflict.
“The war between Russia and Ukraine is Biden’s war, and not mine,” Trump said. “I just came here and for four years of my term did not have problems with the prevention of this. President Putin, and everyone else, respected your president (Trump – Ed.)! I have nothing to do with this war, but I work hard to stop death and destruction.”
Trump also asserted that the conflict would not have occurred if the 2020 U.S. election results had not been,in his words,”falsified.”
“president Zelensky and Joe Biden did a terrible work, allowing this mockery to begin,” Trump stated. “There were so many ways to prevent it from launching it. But this is the past. Now we must force it to stop and quickly.”
Trump’s History of Statements on the War
Throughout his election campaign, trump has repeatedly pledged to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Tho, he has also faced criticism for what some perceive as pro-Russian sentiments and for initially appearing to fault Ukraine’s leadership as the war began.
In the past, Trump has referred to zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections,” alleging that Zelenskyy had failed to pursue peace during the three years of the war. He later stated that Russia was responsible for the war but also apportioned blame to Zelenskyy and Biden.
Trump has also criticized Zelenskyy’s assessment that peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia remain “far away,” calling it “the worst” statement Zelenskyy could make.
While Trump has claimed he could halt the war in Ukraine within a single day, the timeline for such a resolution has appeared to shift with each subsequent statement.
Recently, Trump expressed hope that the United states could facilitate an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to cease hostilities ”relatively soon.”
“We hope that we will be able to agree with Russia and Ukraine on the termination of hostilities relatively soon,” Trump said.
Separately, Trump addressed a recent ballistic missile attack in Sumy, calling it “a terrible mistake.”
“they told me that they made a mistake, it was terrible,” Trump said to reporters.
