A Shift in Tone: Trump and Petro Meet at the White House

Washington D.C. – Tuesday, February 3, 2026, marked a significant, if understated, moment in U.S.-Colombia relations as President Donald Trump hosted Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House. The meeting, lasting two hours, signaled an attempt to move past a year of considerable tension between the two leaders and “relauch the bilateral relationship,” according to reports.

President Petro arrived at 10:53 a.m. Local time and departed at 1:03 p.m. Local time. Unlike receptions for other visiting heads of state, such as those extended to El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele and Argentina’s Javier Milei, Petro’s arrival lacked a high-profile welcome. He arrived in a U.S. Secret Service vehicle displaying the Colombian flag but was not received at the door of the West Wing by Trump nor by the traditional military honor guard, according to reports.

Despite the relatively subdued welcome, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt indicated that President Trump entered the meeting with very good disposition, as reported by Fox News.

Drug Trafficking Takes Center Stage

The primary focus of the discussions centered on drug trafficking, a long-standing point of contention between the two nations. Washington has expressed concern over a reported surge in cocaine production under Petro’s administration, while Petro has defended his government’s crop substitution policies as successful.

The U.S. Delegation included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, who is of Colombian origin. Representing Colombia were Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio, Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez, and Ambassador to the United States, Daniel García-Peña.

From Clash to Dialogue: A Year of Strain

The meeting comes after a year characterized by significant friction and direct criticism between the Trump and Petro administrations. The Trump administration previously withdrew certification of Colombia’s cooperation in the fight against drugs and revoked Petro’s visa. Petro, along with members of his family, were included on the so-called ‘Clinton List’, resulting in financial sanctions related to alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities.

President Petro has been publicly critical of Trump’s policies on immigration, the environment, and the conflict in Gaza. He also condemned U.S. Operations against boats in the Caribbean and the January 3rd apprehension of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. Forces.

However, a shift towards de-escalation began on January 7th, days after Maduro’s apprehension, when both leaders held a telephone conversation and agreed to meet. Petro required a special visa from the U.S. Government to facilitate his travel to Washington in light of the previous sanctions.
