Trump Announces Kashyap Patel as Controversial Choice for FBI Director Amid Wray’s Tenure
Christopher Wray is the current director of the FBI. He was appointed by Donald Trump in 2017 and has three years left in his 10-year term. Trump stated on Truth Social that Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel will be the next FBI director. Trump praised Patel as a skilled lawyer and investigator committed to exposing corruption.
Trump mentioned that Patel will work with Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, to restore integrity to the FBI. Trump’s opinion about the FBI has declined, especially after the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago resort in August 2022, which led to his indictment for allegedly holding classified documents.
Patel is viewed as a controversial figure, especially among Trump’s supporters. He gained attention in 2018 while working for Republican Devin Nunes, helping to discredit the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s campaign. Patel played a key role in releasing a controversial memo about the FBI’s actions during the investigation.
In 2019, Patel joined Trump’s National Security Council and later became the chief of staff for the acting Secretary of Defense. Even though there was consideration for him to replace CIA Director Gina Haspel after the 2020 election, it did not happen. Patel remains a constant figure in Trump’s circle, though his closeness to Trump has varied.
Opinions about Patel are mixed among Trump’s close allies. He was overlooked for the CIA director position, a role he sought.
