US President Donald Trump has cancelled a planned trip to Pakistan by his envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for peace talks with Iran, according to multiple reports.
The decision came shortly after Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi left Islamabad without meeting the US envoys, Pakistani officials told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Trump announced the cancellation on Truth Social, stating there was “tremendous infighting and confusion” within Iran’s leadership and that the trip would be “too much time wasted” on traveling.
The White House had previously said on Friday that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Pakistan’s capital to attempt to revive ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran.
Iranian officials had earlier met with Pakistani army chief field marshal Asim Munir and Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss what Araghchi called Iran’s red lines for negotiations.
Araghchi stated that Tehran would engage with Pakistan’s mediation efforts “until a result is achieved” and confirmed that talks would be indirect.
An open-ended ceasefire has paused most fighting in the region, though economic fallout continues with global shipments of oil, liquefied natural gas, fertilizer and other supplies disrupted by the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials have expressed skepticism about trusting the US following previous talks over Tehran’s nuclear program that ended with attacks by the US and Israel.
