A proposed export ban threatens to disrupt fragile international fuel markets at a time when another 20% of global oil supply is blockaded in the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia's efforts to reroute oil exports through its East-West pipeline toward the Red Sea have encountered obstacles following a drone strike by an Iran-backed Houthi militia, which is also setting up a separate blockade on the Red Sea. In addition, Ukraine’s continued attacks on Russian oil production have led Putin to extend a full ban on diesel exports, prompting Trump to ask Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries. As global fuel reserves reach critical lows with the northern hemisphere approaching peak winter fuel demand, Australia faces acute exposure. Saul Kavonic, head of energy research at MST Financial, told news.com.au that if the US bans diesel exports amid Red Sea disruptions, Asian countries and Australia could be forced to revisit demand and rationing measures. While Australia does not typically import diesel from the US outside of an emergency shipment sent in March, the nation prices off Singapore gas oil and relies heavily on Asian refined barrels, making it highly susceptible to soaring global prices if American exports are restricted.

White House Response and Alternative Measures

While President Trump declared on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that he has called for stopping diesel exports, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed he was investigating the feasibility of a ban as the average price of diesel in America surged to an all-time high of USD $6.52, or roughly A $2.42 per litre. Domestically, an outright ban risks flooding the US market with excess supply and forcing refineries to slow down production. Consequently, the White House has watered down the President’s statements, though Energy Secretary Chris Wright indicated the administration is considering restrictions.
