U.S. Strikes Iranian Nuclear Sites, Raising Mideast War Fears
Updated June 22, 2025
The United States launched military strikes against three nuclear sites in Iran on Saturday, escalating a conflict between Israel and Iran and drawing the U.S. into the fray. President Donald Trump announced the U.S. action as “very successful,” but the full ramifications remain unclear.
The Iranian nuclear strikes targeted Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. A U.S. official said B-2 stealth bombers were used, but it was not promptly clear which sites each bomber hit. Dozens of other U.S. aircraft were also involved.
According to the official, the B-2 bombers deployed 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrators, or MOPs. These ”bunker-buster” bombs, never before used in combat, are designed to tunnel 200 feet into the ground before detonating, making them ideal for targeting underground nuclear facilities like Fordo.Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from submarines were also used, striking targets beyond just nuclear sites, according to sources.

Earlier in the day, sources indicated that B-2 stealth bombers, the only aircraft capable of carrying MOP bombs, were en route to Guam. It remains unconfirmed whether these specific aircraft participated in the strikes.
An Israeli official confirmed that the U.S. notified Israel before the attack. House speaker Mike johnson was also reportedly briefed in advance. However, some sources suggest that the full Gang of 8,including key Democrats, were not informed until after the strikes occurred. This lack of interaction drew sharp criticism from some Democrats. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York called the move “ground for impeachment,” arguing that Trump violated the Constitution by not seeking congressional authorization.
‘Tremendous success,’ Trump says
President Trump initially announced the strikes on Truth Social, surprising many after suggesting the “considerable chance” of negotiations just a day prior.
“A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow,” Trump posted.”All planes are safely on their way home.”
He added, “There is not another military in the world that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!”
