president Donald Trump has declared he will decide “within the next two weeks” whether to order a U.S. military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. This proclamation, made Thursday, ostensibly allows a window for diplomacy, at least temporarily, amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump stated the U.S. is “ready, willing, and able” to act and has been in communication with Iran. When pressed by reporters about the timeline, Trump indicated that “two weeks would be the maximum” period before a decision is made regarding potential strikes against Iran’s nuclear program.
Recently, Iran has declined offers from the United States to restart negotiations concerning its nuclear ambitions.The president’s announcement of a possible delay frustrated Israeli officials, who have been advocating for U.S. military intervention for months,according to sources familiar with the matter.
Amid disagreements between Israeli and American intelligence regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Trump has also expressed skepticism toward his own intelligence community, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
When questioned about Gabbard’s March testimony to Congress, in which she stated that U.S.intelligence assessed Iran was not “building” a nuclear weapon and that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had not authorized the suspended 2003 nuclear weapons program, Trump responded, “She’s wrong.”
Shortly after Trump’s remarks, Gabbard took to X, formerly Twitter, to criticize the news media, stating, “America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. President Trump has been clear that can’t happen, and I agree.”
Speaking to the nation late Saturday night, Trump asserted, “Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. if they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.”
