Updated June 21, 2025

A federal judge has ordered teh release of Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist,⁢ after nearly three months in immigration detention. Khalil, a Columbia University graduate, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents‌ in March ⁢and⁤ held at the LaSalle Detention Center in Jena, La., ‍without criminal ⁣charges.

Judge Michael ⁢Farbiarz ruled‍ that Khalil must be granted bail, citing merit ‍to accusations that the Trump governance unlawfully targeted the activist for his political beliefs and activism. The judge ‍highlighted a strong record indicating Khalil was not a flight risk.

The case⁣ of⁣ Mahmoud Khalil, the pro-Palestinian activist, became emblematic of efforts to suppress political speech and target migrants. Khalil was among several⁤ activists who had their⁣ immigration status revoked, wiht some being⁣ deported. The justification cited was that ⁣their⁤ presence could have ⁤adverse foreign policy consequences.

Noor Abdalla,Khalil’s wife, said in ⁣a‌ statement that she felt relief that⁢ Mahmoud ⁤was coming home to ⁢their family. She⁤ also stated⁤ that the ruling does not address the injustices against their family and others who have spoken ⁤out against israel.

‍ “There is at least something to the ‌underlying claim that there is an effort to use⁢ the ‌immigration charge hear to punish⁢ Mr. Khalil,” Farbiarz said. “And of ‌course that would be unconstitutional.”
