Trump Lawsuit: Pelley & Cooper on CBS Settlement Talks
Pelley: trump settlement Could Damage CBS News Reputation
Updated June 10, 2025
Scott Pelley, a 60 Minutes correspondent, believes a potential settlement between CBS News and former President Donald trump could substantially harm the network’s reputation. Pelley voiced his concerns during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper following CNN’s broadcast of George Clooney’s play, Good Night, and Good luck.
Pelley stated that a settlement demanding an apology from CBS would be “very damaging to CBS, to Paramount, to the reputation of those companies.” He emphasized the importance of the network’s parent company,Paramount Global, publicly supporting CBS News and its journalistic integrity amid political pressure and potential legal action from the Trump management regarding its news content.
Pelley added, “You really wish the top echelons of the company would come out publicly and say, ’60 minutes is a crown jewel of American journalism, and we stand by it 100%.” He noted that he has not heard such a statement.
The controversy comes as Paramount Global awaits regulatory approval for its merger with Skydance Media. Political pressure surrounding CBS News’ coverage, especially on 60 Minutes, has already led to significant changes within the network.
Former president and CEO Wendy McMahon, along with longtime 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens, departed the network. Owens resigned in April, citing a perceived loss of journalistic independence.
“It will be very damaging to CBS,to Paramount,to the reputation of those companies,” Pelley said.
“You really wish the top echelons of the company would come out publicly and say, ‘60 Minutes is a crown jewel of American journalism, and we stand by it 100%,” Pelley added.
What’s next
The outcome of any potential settlement and the completion of the Paramount-Skydance merger will likely shape the future of CBS News and its approach to covering politically sensitive topics.
