Updated June 9, 2025

President Donald trump has‍ declared the situation in Los Angeles “really ugly” and ordered ⁢the arrest of ‍anyone wearing a mask during ongoing protests ⁤against his administration’s immigration policy. Trump announced plans to deploy 2,000 ⁢National Guard troops‍ to California following protests that⁣ began Friday in downtown Los Angeles‍ and spread. Some protesters reportedly ⁣wore masks while setting a car on fire.

Los Angeles police are under attack by protesters, according ⁢to ‍police Capt. Raul Jovel, as ‍reported by CNN. Jovel said officers are making⁣ additional arrests. He added that three ⁣officers sustained‍ minor injuries in clashes with demonstrators. Authorities reported approximately 150 arrests were made between Friday and Sunday during clashes ⁢related to the anti-illegal immigration⁣ raids.

Protests against government migratory policies also erupted ⁤in San francisco. McDonnell reported that alleged crimes included throwing a Molotov cocktail at an officer and a motorcycle at a police line.

Defense Secretary Pete ⁣Hegseth has readied 500 Marines for deployment to Los⁢ Angeles, ABC News⁤ reported, citing U.S. Northern⁣ Command. These special ⁤forces are in a state of‍ “prompt intervention” to‍ address the ongoing protests.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom⁤ criticized Trump, accusing him of acting like a “dictator” in a post on⁢ X.”Incoming and provoking violence, creating mass chaos, militarizing cities, arresting opponents. These are acts of a dictator, not a president,” Newsom wrote.

White House spokesperson ⁤Karoline Leavitt countered on X, accusing Newsom of inaction as “violent revolts broke out⁤ in Los Angeles for days.” Leavitt stated, “Federal agents‍ were attacked by‍ violent extremists and illegal criminals who waved foreign flags because the governor Newsom⁢ was too weak to protect the city.
