Trump May Impose Tariffs on Countries Not Supporting US on Greenland

Trump Threatens Tariffs ⁢Over Greenland Control

President Donald Trump indicated friday he‌ may impose tariffs on⁣ countries that don’t support the United States ⁢acquiring control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. The statement came as a U.S. congressional delegation worked to‌ de-escalate tensions with Danish adn Greenlandic officials in Copenhagen.

Trump has repeatedly expressed⁤ his desire for the U.S. to control Greenland, calling anything less “unacceptable” earlier this week. During a White House event focused on rural healthcare,⁤ he referenced‌ previously threatening European allies with tariffs on ⁣pharmaceuticals.

“I may do that for Greenland ‌too,” Trump saeid. “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along ⁢with Greenland, as we need ⁢Greenland for national security. So I may do that.” He had not previously suggested using tariffs to pressure othre nations on the issue.

Earlier this week, Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with vice‌ President JD Vance and ‍Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. While the meeting didn’t resolve disagreements, both sides agreed to establish‌ a working group. However,⁣ Denmark and the White House subsequently offered differing accounts of the group’s purpose.

European leaders maintain that the future of Greenland is a matter for‍ Denmark and Greenland to decide.Denmark announced this week⁢ it is indeed⁤ increasing ⁢its military presence in the region, according to the Irish Times.
