Trump Sends ⁢Migrants to ‌Guantanamo Amid Los Angeles Protests

Updated June 11, 2025

President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of⁢ additional troops to Los Angeles and the transfer of 9,000 migrants to Guantanamo Bay, escalating the federal response to ongoing protests and immigration concerns. The move comes as Los Angeles enters its fifth day of‌ demonstrations.

Trump stated he was prepared to invoke the⁣ Insurrection Act, a law last used in 1992 ⁤by George H.W. Bush. He defended his decision to deploy troops, asserting that without them, Los‍ Angeles “would be on ⁤fire.”

“I will not allow the United States to be destroyed by ⁢illegal and criminals,” Trump said at Fort Bragg, urging Europe to address immigration issues. He also accused “paid rioters” of instigating the unrest.

The president⁢ indicated a willingness to deploy military force to quell ⁣protests‌ in⁣ other cities. “If they are addressed to‌ us in other cities we will ‍use the same ⁣or greater force,” he said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk voiced his support for Trump’s actions on‍ X, sharing a screenshot of a post where Trump criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles⁤ Mayor karen Bass.

The migrants slated for transfer to ⁤Guantanamo Bay include individuals from various countries, including Italy, Grate ⁤britain, France, Germany, and Haiti, according ⁣to the Washington Post. The administration reportedly did not notify the governments of origin.

Newsom criticized the‌ troop deployment as “reckless” and “disrespectful,” while Bass stated, “President Trump is causing chaos in our‌ city.” She added that federal ⁢forces were “not doing anything” to help.

Bass said the city would “pursue the violent” fringes of the anti-deportation⁤ protests. “Anyone who has vandalized Down Town or sacked shops do not care ⁤about our immigrant community. We will ⁣put you in front of your responsibilities,” she wrote on ⁢Twitter.

The U.S. Northern Command confirmed the arrival of Marines in Los Angeles. Estimates suggest the‌ deployment could cost $134 ⁢million.

Secretary of Defense stated that the military intervention was requested by local authorities,‌ adding that immigration authorities “have the right to conduct safe operations in any state ⁣and jurisdiction of the country”.

Protests have spread beyond Los Angeles, with arrests reported in Austin,⁣ Texas. Gov. ⁣Greg Abbott warned‌ that ‌protesters exceeding legal limits would ⁢be arrested.
