Executive Order planned for Voter ID and Mail-In Ballot Restrictions
United States President Donald Trump announced plans on Saturday, August 30, 2025, to issue an executive order mandating voter identification for all voters, with no exceptions. He stated on his Truth Social platform, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing an Executive Order To That End!!!”
Trump also indicated he intends to severely restrict mail-in voting, allowing it only for voters who are “Very Ill” or members of the “Far Away Military.” This announcement follows Trump’s repeated, and unsubstantiated, claims that the 2020 presidential election was marred by widespread fraud, leading to his loss to Joe Biden.

This is not Trump’s first attempt to overhaul the electoral system thru executive action. In March 2025, he signed a sweeping executive order requiring documentary proof of citizenship for federal elections and stipulating that all ballots must be received by Election Day. However, a judge blocked key provisions of that order in April 2025, citing the U.S.Constitution, wich grants the power to regulate federal elections to states and Congress, not the President.
Trump has also consistently advocated for eliminating electronic voting machines in favor of paper ballots and hand counts, despite election officials asserting that this process is “time-consuming, costly and far less accurate than machine counting.”
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Midterm Elections
trump pledged to issue another executive order to end the use of mail-in ballots and voting machines before the 2026 midterm elections. These elections, scheduled for November 3, 2026, will serve as a crucial nationwide referendum on Trump’s policies since his return to office in January 2025.
