Background: A Recurring Idea
US President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Internal Security to paint the border wall with Mexico black along its entire length, aiming to deter crossings as part of his governance’s intensified anti-immigration offensive. The idea isn’t new; Trump first voiced the concept in 2019 during his initial presidential term.
“Let’s paint it in black,” stated US Secretary of Internal Security Kristi Noem this Tuesday while in New Mexico. “It is a specific request of the president, who knows that with high temperatures in this region, when something is painted black, becomes even warmer, becoming more challenging to climb,” she added.
In 2020, the US border patrol painted small sections of the wall in New Mexico and Arizona, citing the rationale that the dark color would heat the structure and make it harder to scale. However, officials initially justified the intervention as being for the conservation of the steel. Plans at that time called for painting 80 kilometers (approximately 50 miles) of the wall, but the project was ultimately abandoned.
Previous Criticism and Costs
The 2020 painting initiative faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers.Senator Dick Durbin criticized the project, stating, “Our military has more significant things to do than beautify the wall of Trump.” The estimated cost of $1.2 million per mile (1.6 km) further fueled the opposition.
Secretary Noem has not yet disclosed the current estimated cost of the renewed painting project. when questioned by Axios, the Department of Internal Security declined to provide cost details, citing an ongoing public hiring process. A spokesperson stated that disclosing figures could “harm future awards” to contractors.
Skepticism Within Border Patrol
According to CNN reporting on Wednesday, current and former border patrol agents express skepticism about the effectiveness of the black paint. They suggest the initiative is primarily intended to fulfill President Trump’s wishes rather than to achieve a tangible security benefit.
Recent Funding and Wall Expansion
The current push for painting the wall coincides with recently approved federal funding.Congress recently allocated $46 billion for the construction of 1,120 kilometers (approximately 696 miles) of new border wall sections,as well as the installation of a significant number of surveillance technologies.
