Donald Trump stated on Wednesday, October 7, that the world will find out soon enough if a reported plague outbreak in Russia stems from a bioweapon. Speaking at a press conference, the US President compared Russia’s official silence to China’s initial handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, while noting that the Kremlin has assured him the situation remains under control, according to joint reports from mirror.co.uk, dailystar.co.uk, and aol.co.uk.
The international concern follows an incident at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia, where 28-year-old bio-lab worker Darya Shipilova reportedly died after breaking a test tube. Mirror.co.uk and its reporting partners noted that the accident prompted authorities to quarantine five hospitals and place more than 200 people who came into contact with Shipilova under isolation. Amid fears of a potential global outbreak, the World Health Organisation has sought clarifications following reports of a suspected second pneumonia case.
Trump Doubts Outbreak Involved a Bioweapon
During the October 7 press conference covered by mirror.co.uk,dailystar.co.uk, and aol.co.uk, Trump addressed questions regarding whether the outbreak involved a bioweapon. He stated Well, we don’t think so. We’re going to find out soon enough.
When pressed further, he added We don’t think so. If you listen to them it’s under control.
Daily Star highlighted that the US leader could not give a definitive answer regarding weaponization.
Trump drew a sharp parallel between Moscow’s approach and Beijing’s early communication regarding COVID-19. As reported across the participating outlets, he remarked China did not say much, and Russia’s not saying very much either but they do say they have it under control.
The political remarks follow technical concerns raised by Dr Robert Redfield, who led the American Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in early 2020. Speaking to NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, Redfield suggested the outbreak strain might be a manipulated form of the pathogen. Mirror.co.uk and aol.co.uk cited his assessment that standard laboratory protocols requiring antibiotics within 24 hours of exposure would normally be effective.

Now, if the plague that she was working with had been manipulated, to not be sensitive to antibiotics, which some of the bio-offensive programs that the Russians have done… have changed the susceptibility of these organisms to traditional antibiotics, that would explain why maybe they didn’t work.

Siberian Authorities Issue Mask Mandates
Daily Star and companion reports noted that regional authorities in Siberia have issued mask mandates in certain areas alongside the hospital lockdowns. While the Kremlin insists that the situation is contained, independent verification of the biological agent’s exact characteristics remains unavailable. The World Health Organisation continues its independent inquiries into the secondary pneumonia case, leaving open the question of whether the outbreak stems from accidental exposure or engineered modifications.
