CONCORD, Calif. — As Washington, D.C., prepares for a costly military parade, the White Pony Express continues its mission to alleviate hunger in the Bay Area. The organization redirects food that would otherwise be wasted to those in need, operating on the principle of shared prosperity.
Eve Birge, White Pony’s chief executive officer, emphasizes the organization’s commitment to connecting abundance with need. since its inception, White Pony Express has distributed over 26 million pounds of food, equivalent to 22 million meals, thanks to partnerships with businesses like Whole Foods, Starbucks, and Trader Joe’s. This effort prevents thousands of tons of food from ending up in landfills, reducing significant CO2 emissions.
Michael Bagby, 66, a retired big rig pilot, has volunteered with White Pony for three years, delivering food and training new drivers. Despite his passion for fishing, Bagby finds greater fulfillment in helping others.
Bagby expressed his concern about the parade’s cost, stating,”it would be better to show an interest in the true needs of the country rather than a parade.”
On a typical day, Bagby’s route includes stops at schools and churches in Antioch and Brentwood. At one church, Pastor Tania Hernandez noted that 80% of their food pantry’s supplies come from White Pony, supporting around 100 families weekly. “If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” hernandez said.
After delivering several pallets of food, a church member thanked Bagby, saying, “God bless you.”
“It would be better to show an interest in the true needs of the country rather than a parade.”
