This massive heat accumulation serves as a key indicator of ongoing global climate shifts.
Physical Consequences and Ocean Stratification
This sustained energy absorption directly alters physical ocean properties. Warming waters increase ocean stratification, reducing the natural mixing between different water layers and altering established ocean current patterns. Furthermore, warmer water experiences a reduced solubility for carbon dioxide, while thermal expansion accelerates sea level rise. Modern measurements indicate a continuous upward trend in ocean heat content within the upper 2,000 meters of the water column since 1955, with particularly intense heat storage concentrated between the surface and a depth of 700 meters.
