According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, human activities have caused global temperatures to rise by nearly 1.1 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, triggering an energy imbalance where the Earth absorbs more solar radiation than it releases into space. Data from the European Union’s Copernicus Program show that approximately 89 percent of this excess heat is absorbed by the world’s oceans, while about 6 percent warms the land, 4 percent affects the cryosphere, and 1 percent warms the atmosphere. This massive heat accumulation serves as a key indicator of ongoing global climate shifts.

Physical Consequences and Ocean Stratification

This sustained energy absorption directly alters physical ocean properties. Warming waters increase ocean stratification, reducing the natural mixing between different water layers and altering established ocean current patterns. Furthermore, warmer water experiences a reduced solubility for carbon dioxide, while thermal expansion accelerates sea level rise. Modern measurements indicate a continuous upward trend in ocean heat content within the upper 2,000 meters of the water column since 1955, with particularly intense heat storage concentrated between the surface and a depth of 700 meters. The past decade ranks as the warmest for the global ocean since at least the nineteenth century, with the year 2023 establishing an absolute record.

Threats to Coastal Regions and Marine Ecosystems

The accumulation of heat and the resulting melting of terrestrial ice sheets present severe risks for coastal populations. According to IPCC projections, sea level rise will accelerate further and could reach 1.1 meters by the year 2100 if emissions are not drastically reduced. This trajectory exposes coastal areas to risks of flooding. Ecosystems face simultaneous pressures from warming temperatures and ocean acidification. These stressors induce coral bleaching events that devastate marine biodiversity, forcing species to relocate or die off. These ecological shifts represent a risk for food security and livelihoods.

Intensification of Severe Weather and Marine Heatwaves

Higher ocean temperatures also alter atmospheric weather patterns and fuel severe meteorological events. Hurricanes and other severe weather events extract thermal energy from surface and subsurface waters, using this as a source of energy to grow stronger, persist longer, and influence their path. Additionally, the frequency of marine heatwaves—defined as extreme, prolonged temperature spikes lasting five days or longer—has increased over the past two decades. It is predicted that these intense thermal anomalies will become even more frequent, impacting both ecosystems and human activities.
