Trump Seeks to Dismantle voice of America Amid Partisanship claims
Updated june 26, 2025
Former President Donald Trump is urging Republicans to pull support from the state-funded Voice of America (VOA), accusing the news organization of partisan bias. Trump’s renewed focus on dismantling the VOA, a broadcaster established in 1942, highlights his ongoing effort to reshape U.S. media influence and cut government spending.
VOA, created to counter Nazi propaganda during World War II, later became a key instrument for promoting American ideals during the Cold War. Trump, though, contends that the VOA has shifted toward left-leaning partisanship in recent years. He has pledged to shut it down as part of his broader agenda to eliminate what he deems wasteful government expenditures.
“Why would a republican want Democrat ‘mouthpiece’ Voice of America (VOA) to continue? It’s a TOTAL, LEFTWING DISASTER – No Republican should vote for its survival.KILL IT!” Trump wrote Wednesday on his Truth Social platform.
Earlier that day, Kari lake, a senior adviser to Trump, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the U.S. Agency for global Media (USAGM), which oversees VOA, is “rotten to the core” and needs restructuring to align with Trump’s “America First” policy.
committee Chairman Brian Mast described USAGM as ”a cesspool of spies, lies, and mismanagement” that “has promoted the very propaganda it was created to defeat.” He also alleged the agency hired foreign nationals who pose security risks.
Lake stated that nearly 640 full-time staffers and more than 500 contractors have been laid off at USAGM and VOA.
Democrats and press freedom advocates have voiced concerns. Clayton Weimers, executive director of reporters Without Borders, said the dismantling of public media outlets like Voice of America would be “an unprecedented gift from Trump to the dictatorial censorship regimes in countries like China and Iran.”
What’s next
The future of VOA remains uncertain as the debate over its funding and mission continues in Congress. The outcome could substantially impact the U.S.’s global media presence and its ability to counter disinformation.
