Treasury Secretary Predicts Supreme Court Will Uphold Trump Tariffs
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday he doubts the Supreme Court will block president Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs, even as a court decision on the matter possibly arrives this week.Bessent cited the court’s previous upholding of the Affordable Care Act as precedent.
“I believe that it is indeed very unlikely that the Supreme Court will overrule a president’s signature economic policy,” Bessent stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “They did not overrule Obamacare, I believe that the Supreme Court does not want to create chaos.”
The Supreme Court previously upheld a key provision of the Affordable Care Act in June, supporting a panel that recommends preventive care services insurers must cover without cost to patients.
bessent’s remarks followed Trump’s declaration Saturday that he intends to implement new tariffs on European goods until “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”
Trump detailed his plans on his Truth Social account, but did not specify which goods would be subject to the new tariffs. See his post here.
