President Donald Trump has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the establishment of a peace deal. Speaking with ABC News on April 5, 2026, the president stated that if these conditions are not met, we’re blowing up the whole country.

The deadline is set for Tuesday, April 8, 2026, at 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time. This ultimatum follows previous deadlines for the reopening of the maritime passageway, which the president has already extended twice. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical trade route through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes.

The current tensions are part of a wider regional war that began on February 28, 2026, after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. In response, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz.

Threats to Infrastructure

President Trump indicated that very little will be off-limits if a deal is not reached. He specifically mentioned that the U.S. Would target bridges and power plants, describing the potential escalation as bridge day and it’s going to be power plant day in the country of Iran.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC News on April 6, 2026, that the administration is leaving all options on the table. When asked if the U.S. Was escalating or scaling back the conflict, Bessent stated that the two are not mutually exclusive, noting that sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate.

Tehran has responded to these threats with its own vows of retaliation. Iranian officials stated that if the country’s fuel and energy infrastructure is attacked, the U.S. And its allies in the region will see strikes against their own fuel, energy, information technology systems, and water desalination infrastructure.

Military and Diplomatic Developments

The escalation occurs alongside a recent military recovery operation. President Trump announced the rescue of a U.S. Airman whose F-15 jet was shot down over Iran. The airman had evaded capture for more than a day by hiding and scaling rugged terrain before being rescued. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated the president on the execution of the mission.

Despite the public threats, diplomatic channels remain active. Reports indicate that Oman has conducted last-ditch talks with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Egypt and Pakistan have worked to maintain communications between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian officials remain defiant, stating that the blockade of the strait will continue until Iran is paid for war damages.

The region continues to see active combat, with the Israel Defense Forces reporting that Iranian missiles were launched toward Israel on April 6, 2026, including strikes that targeted the area of Dimona.

If it happens, it happens. And if it doesn’t, we’re blowing up the whole country. We’re blowing up, as I said, it’s going to be bridge day and it’s going to be power plant day in the country of Iran.
