Trump and Xi Discuss TikTok Deal, Trade, and Ukraine War
On Friday, US President Donald Trump discussed progress on a potential deal regarding the TikTok application during a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Beijing,in turn,called for a “non-discriminatory” approach to the issue.
on Thursday, President Trump expressed his desire to reach a “final formula” concerning the transfer of TikTok’s operations in the United States to a group of American investors.
“We have made progress on many extremely important issues,including trade,fentanyl,the necessity of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine,and the approval of the Tech Talk deal,” Trump stated in a post on his platform. He also expressed his “gratitude” for President Xi’s position on the TikTok application, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
President Xi urged his American counterpart to avoid “unilateral” commercial restrictions and to provide “an open, fair, and non-discriminatory habitat for Chinese companies investing in the United States,” citing TikTok as an example. He described the conversation as “constructive.”
The two presidents agreed to meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit hosted by South Korea on october 31 and november 1. Trump also announced plans for a phone call and a potential visit to China “early next year.”
