Trump Transition Team Investigates Adviser Boris Epshteyn Over Payment Allegations
Trump’s Transition Team Investigates Adviser for Alleged Misconduct
Donald Trump’s transition team reviewed allegations against adviser Boris Epshteyn. The team examined whether Epshteyn accepted payments for access to Trump from individuals seeking influence in the new administration.
Lawyer David Warrington conducted the review, recommending that Epshteyn’s access to Trump be limited. Allegations suggested that Epshteyn targeted Scott Bessent, Trump’s nominee for treasury secretary. Epshteyn reportedly opposed Bessent due to Bessent’s refusal to pay a significant retainer.
The investigation also included a complaint from former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens. He claimed Epshteyn implied that business dealings were expected for advocacy regarding his appointment to the president. Greitens expressed feeling pressured by this expectation.
Though Epshteyn is not accused of illegal actions, the investigation aims to reduce his influence among Trump’s inner circle. Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with individuals he views as seeking personal gain from his presidency.
Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, stated that a review of consulting agreements, including those related to Epshteyn, was completed. He affirmed the team’s commitment to supporting Trump’s agenda.
Experts noted that such a review is unusual in this context. Epshteyn, who played a significant part in Trump’s legal strategies after leaving office, defended himself against the claims. He labeled them as false and defamatory.
Eric Trump, the president-elect’s son, remarked that if the allegations are true, it could jeopardize Epshteyn’s place in the campaign. He emphasized that Trump has made it clear that seeking personal profit from the administration is unacceptable.
The investigation into Epshteyn was first reported by the conservative website Just the News. Trump acknowledged that some close to him may exploit their connections for profit but insisted that it should not happen within his administration.
