Trump announces Travel Ban targeting 12 Countries Amid Security Concerns
Updated June 6,2025
President Trump has once again implemented a sweeping travel ban, this time affecting citizens from 12 nations. The governance cites national security and visa overstay rates as primary justifications for the travel restrictions, echoing similar policies from his previous term. The new order, set to take effect Monday, also imposes tighter regulations on seven additional countries.
Trump highlighted the recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, as a catalyst for the new travel ban, though the suspect in that attack was from Egypt, a country not included on the list. This discrepancy has fueled criticism and raised questions about the true motivations behind the ban.
The African Union has urged the U.S. to adopt a more balanced and evidence-based approach to travel restrictions. Chad’s President, Mahamat Deby, responded to the ban by imposing a reciprocal ban on U.S. citizens traveling to Chad.
Refugees International condemned the ban against Haiti as “racist.” Yael Schacher, director for the Americas, pointed out that Haiti was singled out with specific claims that Haitian immigrants “harm American communities.” Schacher added that this ban compounds existing hardships for Haitians, especially given the ongoing political instability and gang violence in Haiti following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
YAEL SCHACHER: You know, like, it’s heaping more and more on this population, which is one of the most vulnerable, like, if not most in need of legal pathways and protection to the United States, and doesn’t have options.
Cecile Accilien, who studies Haiti at the University of Maryland, emphasized the dire situation in Haiti, where gangs control much of the capital and nearly half the population faces hunger. She described the ban as inhumane, especially in light of mass deportations of Haitians from the neighboring Dominican Republic.
CECILE ACCILIEN: It’s inhumane in whichever way you look at it because it’s not looking at the context of where Haiti is right now, at this very moment.
Afghanistan is also heavily impacted by the new policy. Diaa Hadid reports that this travel ban is the latest in a series of measures targeting Afghans. Previous actions include suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, cutting aid to Afghanistan, and ending temporary protected status. Advocates for Afghan allies express dismay at the administration’s actions.
SHAWN VANDIVER: It is indeed really just – this administration, the cruelty is the point,it truly seems.
What’s next
The implications of this travel ban are far-reaching, potentially affecting international relations, humanitarian efforts, and the lives of countless individuals seeking refuge or opportunity in the United States. Legal challenges are anticipated, and the long-term impact remains to be seen.
