The White House initially stated that the president was flying aboard Air Force One from Ankara, where he had attended a NATO summit, directly to Britain.

Secret Service and military directed him onto a different plane due to a security threat. “They wanted me to go on a different flight, different plane,” Trump said after returning from an event in Ohio, according to Reuters. “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.”

Air Force One Decoy Operation and Passenger Safety

For the journey from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, the older Air Force One aircraft served as a decoy while carrying journalists and White House staff who believed the president was on board. According to reporting by The Guardian and CBC, travelers in the press cabin were advised to keep their window shades closed during the flight.

When asked why reporters had to keep their window shades shut, Trump stated they were “probably on a dangerous flight,” adding, “But if I go, you go. Right?” according to CBC.

Commentators subsequently questioned whether the operation placed aides and journalists at risk on the aircraft presumed to carry the president. Trump defended the security choices on August 12, 2026, arguing that the aircraft he ultimately flew on faced a higher level of vulnerability. “I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk,” Trump told Reuters. “I think it was at greater risk because that would be the plane I think that they would be more likely to go for.”

Escalating Regional Tensions and New Aircraft Scrutiny

The trip marked the first international travel for a newly renovated, Qatari-donated jet that had brought Trump to Ankara for the NATO summit. Trump unexpectedly announced prior to departure that he would switch to the older baby blue Air Force One “for old time’s sake,” while the new plane would make a separate stop at the British base so U.S. service members could tour it, as noted by CBC and Reuters.

The speedy upgrades to the Qatari-donated aircraft had already triggered questions over its cost and security. The international transit took place amid escalating hostilities with Iran, which shares a border with Turkey and was identified by reports as the source of the assassination threat prompting the Secret Service intervention.

Despite the unusual transfer involving the catering truck, Trump emphasized that he deferred entirely to law enforcement directives. “Well, it’s only up to Secret Service. I just follow what they’d like to do, so I go by Secret Service and the military,” Trump stated to Reuters.
