The Corduroy Gospel: A Letter My nuns Would Have Writen to the President
Pittsburg, CA – The scent of incense and floor wax still clings to my memories of St. Peter Martyr School. Back then, in the San Francisco Bay Area, my uniform was a somber affair: Ash Wednesday corduroys, a starched white shirt, and a maroon V-neck sweater that always seemed a size too big.Every morning, I’d trek from our apartment on 10th Street, a left on Montezuma, and fifteen minutes later, I was in the hallowed halls, ready for Sister roberta, Sister Eileen, and Sister Estelle.
Those nuns, those Dominican priests – they instilled in us a sense of faith, humility, and, above all, grace. I’m no saint, and the Church, as we all no, is far from perfect. But lately, I’ve been pondering what my old teachers would make of the current state of political discourse, especially the pronouncements of certain world leaders who seem to wear their piety on their sleeves, yet their actions often tell a different story.
I have a sneaking suspicion that if those nuns were still teaching today, they’d have us all pulling out our pencils and notebooks to write a letter. So, in their spirit, here goes:
Dear President Trump,
Do you know St. Peter Martyr School? probably not. But it was named after St. Peter of Verona, a man who took on heresy and paid the ultimate price – an axe to the skull, courtesy of the Cathars. Some things never change, do they?
I must say, I saw your presentation at the National Bible Museum, launching the “America Prays” initiative. Good for you. And congratulations on the “God Bless the USA Bible.” $1.3 million, huh? Not bad for missionary work.
I was particularly struck by your statement: “To have a grate nation, you have to have religion. Ther has to be something after we go through all of this – and that something is God.”
Well said, Mr. President. And not surprising, given that you once called the Bible your favorite book. But even I, a humble alum of St. Peter Martyr, need to occasionally revisit those pages to keep myself grounded.
So, here’s an idea. I’m going to share a Bible verse, followed by a recent quote from you. Not to judge, mind you.But perhaps we can all benefit from a little soul-searching, asking ourselves if our actions truly align with the values we profess.
ready?
