Investors found some relief after President Donald Trump prolonged a ceasefire with Iran, sending U.S. Stocks higher and setting up a positive open across Asian markets on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The extension of the ceasefire, announced just hours before its initial two-week period was set to expire, eased immediate fears of renewed military escalation between the United States and Iran. Trump stated the pause in hostilities would continue to allow Iran time to submit a unified proposal for negotiations, with the ceasefire lasting “such time as their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded.”
Asian equity markets responded positively to the development. South Korea’s KOSPI rose 7.1%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 5.5%, and Taiwan’s TAIEX increased by 4.6% as of 2:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index, returning from a long holiday weekend, added 3.1%, while Australia’s ASX 200 climbed 2.6%. Benchmark indices in Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines each advanced by more than 2.0%.
