The search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of Savannah Guthrie of NBC’s “Today” show, continues to intensify as investigators piece together a timeline of events surrounding her disappearance from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1st. New evidence, including security footage from neighboring properties, is being analyzed in hopes of uncovering clues about the 84-year-old’s abduction.

Authorities are currently examining video captured on a Ring camera at approximately 1:54 a.m. on the night of the disappearance. The footage shows a bald man wearing a gray jacket and a backpack scaling a wall near a home in the area. This individual bears a resemblance to the masked man seen in security footage obtained from Nancy Guthrie’s own property, who was observed approaching her front door. Another video shows a man with a baseball cap and a black backpack attempting to open a car door handle in the neighborhood the morning after Guthrie vanished.

While the connection between these individuals and Guthrie’s abduction remains unclear, law enforcement is treating the footage as a significant lead. Sources indicate the videos are being investigated as part of the broader inquiry. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has requested residents to submit any video footage from January 1st to February 2nd that may contain relevant information, including images of vehicles, pedestrians, or anything considered “out of the ordinary.”

Forensic consultant Kimberlee Guluzian, a lecturer at Cal State Long Beach with decades of experience as a crime scene investigator, explained that detectives are likely employing a range of investigative techniques beyond video analysis. “They’re probably pulling data from license plate readers and cell towers to see who was in the area in the days and weeks before Guthrie’s kidnapping,” she said. This suggests authorities are exploring the possibility that the abduction was premeditated and that the perpetrator may have been surveilling Guthrie’s home prior to the incident.

“They’re trying to look for people or cars that typically aren’t in the area,” Guluzian added. “So if it was a rental car, they’re going to try to get a license plate and go back to the company to see who rented that vehicle. They’re just trying to find any lead possible at this point.”

The investigation has already involved the detention and subsequent release of a 36-year-old man following a traffic stop south of Tucson on Tuesday. Authorities searched his family’s home, but no evidence directly linking him to Guthrie’s disappearance was found. A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson stated the detention was “part of follow-up on incoming leads.”

The release of images and video of the armed, masked individual outside Guthrie’s home on Tuesday generated over 4,000 tips within 24 hours, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Investigators have also recovered a pair of black gloves near Guthrie’s home on February 11th, which are currently undergoing DNA analysis.

Adding a deeply personal element to the ongoing search, Savannah Guthrie shared a touching video on Instagram Thursday. The clip depicts a younger Nancy Guthrie picking flowers with her children, accompanied by a message of unwavering hope: “Our lovely mom. We will never give up on her. Thank you for your prayers and hope.”

The circumstances surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance are particularly concerning, as she was reportedly taken from her home without her necessary medication. Authorities have not disclosed the nature of her medical condition, but have indicated that her health is a critical factor in the urgency of the search.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that images showing “an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera” were recovered. The footage bears a Nest watermark, and an empty mount found at the scene appears designed for a Google product, though it was previously reported that the footage was inaccessible due to a lack of subscription.

Law enforcement is urging anyone with information related to the case to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, visit tips.fbi.gov, or contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900 or 88-CRIME. The investigation remains active and ongoing, with authorities pursuing all available leads in the hopes of locating Nancy Guthrie and bringing those responsible for her disappearance to justice.
