Tulsi Gabbard has resigned as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in the administration of President Donald Trump, citing her husband’s health as the reason for her departure.
Gabbard stated that she needed to leave her post as the head of the U.S. Intelligence community because her husband is currently battling cancer.
Congressional Scrutiny and Iran Conflict
The resignation follows a period of heightened tension regarding the administration’s handling of international conflicts. According to AP News, Gabbard’s departure comes weeks after she appeared before a congressional hearing where she repeatedly dodged questions concerning the conflict with Iran.

During those proceedings, lawmakers questioned whether the White House had been warned about the potential fallout resulting from the Iran conflict. Gabbard did not provide clear answers to these inquiries during the hearing.
Records show Gabbard had been active in these oversight roles recently, including appearing before the Senate Committee on Intelligence on March 18, 2026.
Intelligence Leadership Transition
As the administration manages the vacancy at the top of the intelligence community, attention has turned to Aaron Lukas. Lukas is a veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) with 20 years of experience.
Lukas previously appeared before the Senate Committee on Intelligence on April 9, 2025, during his pending confirmation to serve as the principal deputy director of the DNI.
