Turkey Boasts Europe’s Largest Fast-Charging Network for Electric Vehicles
Turkey Charges Ahead: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Booms
Istanbul – Turkey is rapidly building one of EuropeS most robust electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, with the number of charging sockets surging from a mere 3,000 to 26,000 in just two years. This extraordinary growth mirrors the booming EV market, which has seen the number of electric vehicles on Turkish roads skyrocket from 6,000 to 154,000 in the same period.
“In our country, there is approximately one charging socket for every six electric vehicles, while the EU average is 13,” said Yılmaz, head of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK).
This rapid expansion is fueled by government initiatives aimed at making Turkey a leader in electric mobility.
Green Powering the Future
Remarkably, about half of Turkey’s charging stations are “green charging stations,” powered by renewable energy sources.
“Three-quarters of the electricity consumed for charging EVs is sourced from renewable energy,” Yılmaz emphasized.
This commitment to sustainability aligns with Turkey’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2053. The EPDK has implemented regulations to ensure that EVs are powered solely by renewable energy, further solidifying Turkey’s green credentials.
A Thriving Market
The growth of the charging network is mirrored by the burgeoning EV market. Sales surged 39 percent year-on-year to 83,298 units in the first eleven months of 2024, according to the Automotive Distributors’ and Mobility Association (ODMD).EVs now account for nearly 10 percent of the Turkish car market, a meaningful jump from 7.1 percent in the same period last year.
This trend is expected to continue, with projections indicating that Turkey will have 1.3 million EVs and 142,000 charging points by 2030. By 2035, these numbers are expected to soar to 3.3 million EVs and 273,000 charging points.
Global Automakers Take Notice
Turkey’s commitment to electric mobility has attracted global automakers. Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır highlighted that major brands like Ford,Toyota, and Renault are shifting their new generation vehicle production to Turkey.
“The government’s commitment to electric cars and new technologies paved the way for many global brands to move their new generation vehicle production to Türkiye,” Kacır noted.
With its ambitious goals, supportive policies, and rapidly expanding infrastructure,Turkey is poised to become a major player in the global electric vehicle revolution.
Turkey Electrifies its Future: A Charging Network That Leads the Charge
Istanbul – Forget sluggish starts, Turkey’s electric vehicle market is charging ahead at breakneck speed, leaving much of Europe in its dust. Within just two years, the number of charging sockets across the country has exploded from a paltry 3,000 to an impressive 26,000. This surge comes as no surprise considering the simultaneous boom in EV adoption, with the number of electric vehicles on Turkish roads soaring from a mere 6,000 to a robust 154,000 in the same timeframe.
Yılmaz, head of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), highlights the impact of this rapid growth, stating, “In our country, there is approximately one charging socket for every six electric vehicles, while the EU average is 13.” This impressive ratio underlines Turkey’s commitment to fostering a thriving EV ecosystem.
From Grid to Green: A Sustainable Electrification Story
What truly sets Turkey apart is its dedication to “green charging.” Remarkably, approximately 50% of the nation’s charging stations are powered by renewable energy sources, signifying a nation prioritizing sustainability in its electric mobility revolution. “Three-quarters of the electricity consumed for charging EVs is sourced from renewable energy,” Yılmaz emphasizes.
This devotion to clean energy aligns perfectly with Turkey’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2053. The EPDK has implemented stringent regulations mandating that EVs draw power exclusively from renewable sources, solidifying turkey’s position as a global leader in green transportation.
Driving Towards the Future: A Market in Overdrive
The burgeoning charging network acts as a powerful catalyst for the booming EV market. Sales surged an impressive 39 percent year-on-year to 83,298 units in the first eleven months of 2024, according to the Automotive Distributors’ and Mobility Association (ODMD). With EVs now accounting for nearly 10 percent of the Turkish car market, up from 7.1 percent in the same period last year, the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
Projections paint a rosy picture for Turkey’s electric future. By 2030, the country is anticipated to boast 1.3 million EVs and 142,000 charging points. This number is projected to skyrocket to 3.3 million EVs and 273,000 charging points by 2035.
Global Automakers Plug In to Turkey’s Promise
This rapid growth and commitment to sustainability have not gone unnoticed. Global automakers are increasingly drawn to Turkey’s burgeoning EV market.Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır highlights the trend, stating, “The government’s commitment to electric cars and new technologies paved the way for manny global brands to move their new generation vehicle production to Türkiye.”
Major car manufacturers like Ford, Toyota, and Renault are leading the charge, relocating their new generation vehicle production to Turkey. This influx of global automotive giants signifies a resounding vote of confidence in Turkey’s electric mobility future.
With audacious goals, supportive policies, and a rapidly expanding infrastructure, Turkey is firmly positioned to become a global powerhouse in the electric vehicle revolution.
