Turkey has become the leading exporter of guns to the United States as 2021. This surge is driven by brands like Canik, owned by Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS), which offer affordable and reliable firearms. The rise of Turkish guns coincides with increased gun violence and accessibility concerns in the U.S.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2022, an 18-year-old used a borrowed Canik 9 mm pistol to fatally shoot another 18-year-old. The Canik pistol, known for its design suitable for smaller hands and ease of use, has found a niche among new gun owners. Its affordability, typically under $400, makes it an attractive option in the U.S. market.
Iain Harrison, editor in chief of Recoil magazine, noted the unique position of Turkish manufacturers. He said their price points are comparable to lower-quality guns, but “quality-wise, even despite the price, thay’re right up there with the European guys.”
