Washington, D.C. – In a swift turn of events, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with teh fatal shooting of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, President Donald Trump announced Friday. The suspect, identified later by law enforcement officials as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson from Utah, is now in custody.
“I think with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” President Trump stated in an interview on Fox News. “I think we’re in great shape. He’s in custody.”
According to the President, the apprehension was aided by an individual close to the suspect. “Essentially somebody that was very close to him turned him in,” Trump revealed.
The remarks preceded a scheduled news conference by authorities regarding the manhunt for the individual responsible for Kirk’s death. Kirk was fatally shot on Wednesday during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University (UVU).
Three senior law enforcement officials confirmed to NBC that the suspect was turned in by a family member who recognized the individual from photos released by the FBI.
President Trump, who stated he was informed of the arrest just minutes before the interview, cautioned that some details are “subject to change.” Though,he asserted,”But you know, the facts are the facts. We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for. But they drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.”
The President also expressed his hope that the suspect would receive the death penalty.
The FBI had released grainy photos and video footage on Thursday of a “person of interest” jumping off the rooftop from where Kirk was shot and fleeing the scene.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative organization focused on political activism in high schools and colleges. He was at UVU in Orem for the first stop on Turning Point’s “American Comeback Tour” when the tragic incident occurred. Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings when he was shot once in the neck.
